The First Time I Heard God’s Voice

I used to think hearing God’s voice was for other people—pastors, prophets, or maybe the super-spiritual. But not me. I grew up in a church that didn’t teach that God still speaks, so even when He did, I didn’t recognize it.

Looking back, I now see that God had been speaking to me all along, but I didn’t have the framework to understand it. His voice was there in quiet nudges, in moments of deep knowing, in words I couldn’t quite explain. But because I wasn’t expecting Him to speak, I missed it.

When I Finally Started Listening

Fast forward to the moment I actually set out to hear from God. I was eager, ready for big revelations and divine direction. I had a plan—surely, God had one too.

I remember sitting down, pen in hand, asking God to show me what He had for me in the next 3, 5, 10 years. I waited for grand visions, specific steps, maybe even an audible voice.

Instead, I got two words.

“Trust me.”

That’s it. Just trust me.

I’ll be honest—it wasn’t the answer I wanted. I was looking for instructions, not an invitation to trust. But for weeks and months, those were the only words I heard.

• “Trust me with your finances.”
• “Trust me with your family.”
• “Trust me with your future.”
• “Trust me to disciple you.”

Every time I asked a question, the answer was the same. Trust me.

At first, I wrestled with it. Wasn’t following God about doing something? I had degrees, ministry experience—I was ready to be used. But God wasn’t asking me to do. He was asking me to be.

Learning to Simply Be With God

After months of hearing “trust me,” I finally got a new phrase:

“Be with me.”

Again, not a task, not a mission—just an invitation.

It was frustrating at first. “Okay, God, I’m here. Now what?” But I slowly realized He wasn’t interested in just using me—He wanted to know me. To shape me. To lead me from a place of relationship, not just responsibility.

Obedience Unlocks the Next Step

As I spent time simply being with Him, something incredible happened. The things He had put in my heart began to unfold naturally—not from striving, but from abiding.

• Books were written—The God Speaks Bible, The God Speaks Workbook, and Jesus Training Manual all came from this place of listening.
• Ministry opportunities opened—not through force, but through following His lead.
• Faith deepened—because I finally learned that hearing God isn’t about what we do; it’s about who we trust.

And when I stopped writing down what He was saying, the words stopped coming. Not because God wasn’t speaking, but because I wasn’t stewarding what He had already said.

That moment changed everything. Obedience isn’t just about big steps—it’s about responding to the small ones, too.
